Concept
Home to people from diverse backgrounds, Guro retains vestiges of its past as the Guro Industrial Complex. Furthermore, it is a future-oriented place that seeks to establish itself as a digital valley. Perhaps the biggest charm of Guro lies in the fact that its multiple facets cannot be defined in just one word.
The keyword of this project is “harmony”. The house-shaped structure which conveys Korean sentiments includes seven window frames symbolizing various ethnic groups and countries. Windows represent our understanding and perception of the world. There are Western-style window frames as well as Chinese-style ones. In addition, there are window frames of the past as well as those of the present and future. This work has its root in the participants’ will to create a place of harmony and co-existence.

This project is an attempt to introduce New Genre Public Art, which is yet unfamiliar in Guro. Breaking free from the existing practice of dispatching a participating artist to a designated area to set up his or her work, local residents in agreement on the installation of the work gathered to devise the theme and shape of the work on their own. I took on the role of director and helped ensure the successful completion of the work. In particular, based on my previous experience of using various materials, I gave advice on what materials they should use.
In terms of achieving the balance between artistic completion and public concern, this project was carried out successfully. Having forged a sense of solidarity with the participants, I hope to have a chance to work with them again in the future. Moreover, some of the participants confessed to undergoing inner transformation through this new experience, which certainly added to the overall significance of the project.

Whereas public sculptures in the past were made of stone, lumber or metal, these days chemical materials are mostly used. To start with, I considered how to construct an outdoor public sculpture using natural materials instead of metal or plastic. I eventually thought of Korean paper waxed with ground beans (The process of waxing floor paper with ground beans is known as ‘kongdam’.) i.e. laminated paper lacquered with bean oil, and suggested it to the participants.

Once waxed with ground beans, paper becomes water-resistant as bean oil functions as a natural coating agent in the same way as varnish. In addition, by repeatedly waxing the paper with ground beans after each color was added, it was possible to create layers of transparent and overlapped bottom colors. In daylight, we observe the delicate colors of the window frames made from Korean paper dyed with natural dyes, as well as the objet of each window. At night, light seeps out from the lamps inside the structure.

크기 : (w)5x(d)1.5x(h)6m

サイズ:(w)5x(d)1.5x(h)6m
